Begin with the source of moisture
Cooking, showering and drying laundry can add moisture to indoor air. Leaks or water entering the building can create separate problems. A ventilation system should not be used to disguise a source that needs repair.
Notice where condensation forms, when it appears and whether particular rooms are affected. Those observations help distinguish everyday moisture from a problem that needs a closer building assessment.
Give moisture a way out
Kitchen and bathroom extraction can help remove moisture where it is produced. Existing fans and ducting should be checked for suitable operation and discharge. Airing the home can also contribute to ventilation when conditions allow.
Keeping a room warm, improving airflow and dealing with cold surfaces are related but different tasks. A useful plan considers them together instead of assuming one product will resolve everything.
Choose a system for the property
Positive pressure and heat recovery systems work differently. The home’s construction, airtightness and existing ventilation help determine which approach is suitable.
Ask where air will be drawn from, how it will be distributed, what filtering is included and what ongoing maintenance is needed. Those practical details matter more than a generic promise of completely dry windows.
Heating and ventilation have different jobs
A heat pump controls heating and cooling. A ventilation system manages air exchange. Installing one does not automatically remove the need to consider the other, or to repair a leak or improve extraction.
Health New Zealand explains ways to improve ventilation at home. For rental properties, check the current requirements with Tenancy Services rather than relying on a product brochure.
Turn the observations into a plan
Tell us what you have noticed, the age and layout of the home and any extraction already installed. We can discuss a ventilation assessment and explain suitable SmartVENT options.
